We just started a new list of public Jabber servers at list.jabber.at. It also shows some information about the server as well as contact details. This list allows admins to register new servers in an almost fully automated fashion. A powerful API is available so clients can fetch servers based on location or required features. As you may or may not know, the XSF has a list of public servers on their homepage. Even though requests from server-admins to be put onto that list are quite frequent, the list is ridiculously out of date (the last server was added in 2010 and was the only one in that year) and quite a few servers do not even work any more. Despite frequent offers for help, the XSF is incapable of maintaining such a list. We therefor ask:
  • Server administrators: Please create an account and add your own server, if it allows public registration. Adding a server is very fast and easy. In the spirit of a distributed network, we also ask you to add a link to the list to your homepage so users can easily discover other jabber-servers.
  • Client developers: You are welcome to use our API (help) to suggest public servers to users that attempt to create a new account.
